The Decided Self:

“I can direct things, but only when the elephant doesn’t have desires of his own” p.4

“The rider… is conscious controlled thought. The elephant, in contrast, is everything else. The elephant includes the gut feelings, visceral reactions, emotions, and intuitions that comprise much of the automatic system. The elephant and the rider each have their own intelligence, and when they work together well they enable the unique brilliance of human beings.” p.17
The Pursuit of Happiness:

Happiness can only be found within but some things outside yourself are worth striving for, despite the teachings of Buddha which may have gone to far.

-The pleasure of getting what you want is often fleeting. Successes along the journey are more rewarding.

-We are no out good at effective forecasting where we predict how we’ll feel in the future.

-happy people grow rich faster because they are more appealing to others and their positive emotions help them commit to projects, work hard and invest in their futures. p.89

-people genetically have a set level of happiness but it’s more a range. You can also effect your own happiness.

Happiness = Set Point + Conditions of your life + Activities you do

External conditions to improve happiness include commuting, lack of control, shame, and relationships.

More than sex, people value flow. Flow is total immersion in a task that is challenging yet closely matched to ones abilities. Sex is pleasure. Flow is gratification. Pleasures should be savored and varied. p.95-96

Focus on improving your strengths rather than overcoming your weaknesses.

Money can buy happiness is you spend it on experiences that bring you closer to others. “…work less, earn less, accumulate less, and ‘consume’ more family time, vacations, and other enjoyable as activities.” p.100-101

Freedom is doing when there are constraints on choice. Too many choices leads to unhappiness in your one choice.
Love and Attachments:

“True love exists, I believe, but it is not – cannot be – pain that lasts forever. True love, the love that undergirds strong marriages, is simply string companionate love, with some added passion, between two people who are firmly committed to each other.” p.127
The Uses of Adversity:

People are happier when their short term goals fit together with their long term goals so that sorry ten goals Anne praying if your long term goals. p.145

To benefit from adversity:

# 1 – do what you can before adversity strokes to change your cognitive style. Meditation, therapy.

# 2 – cherish and build your social network.

# 3 – religious faith and practice can aid growth

# 4 – You must write down your thoughts and feelings. Pennebaker suggests writing continuously for 15min for several days. Wow about what happened, how you feel about it and make sure to write about why you feel that way. Why did this happen? What good can I drive from it? p.148-149

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

The rider can only be as successful to the extent as he trains the elephant.

“Work on your strengths, not your weaknesses… Life offers so many choices to use one tool instead of another, and often you can use a strength to get around a weakness.”
Divinity With or Without God:

The constant stream of trivial concerns and ego-centric thoughts keeps people locked in the material and orange works unable to perceive sacredness and divinity. This is why Eastern religions rely heavily on meditation, to help quiet the charter of the self. Spiritual transformation is essentially pruning back and hiking the self. Sororal paths are hard work that require years of meditation, prayer, self control and sometimes self denial. p.207
Happiness Comes from Between:

“People gain a sense of meaning when their lives cohere across the three levels of their existence.” Physical-Psychological-Sociocultural p.227

Meaning and purpose simply emerge from the coherence and people can get on with the business of living” p.229

The Meaning of Life: “what can you do to have a good, happy, fulfilling and meaningful life? What is the answer to the question of propose within life? I believe the answer can be found by understanding the kind of creature that we are, divided in the many ways we are divided. We were shaped by individual selection to be selfish creatures who struggle for resources, pleasure, and prestige, and we were shaped by group selection to be hive creatures who long to lose ourselves in something larger. We are social creatures who need love and attachments, and we are industrious creatures with needs for effectance, able to enter a state of vital engagement with our work. We are the rider and we are the elephant, and or mental health depends on the two working together, each drawing on the other’s strengths. I don’t believe there is an inspiring answer to the question, ‘What is the purpose of life?’ Yet by drawing on ancient wisdom and modern science, we can find compelling answers to the question of purpose within life. The final version of the happiness hypotheses is that happiness comes from between. Happiness is not something you can find, acquire, or achieve directly. You have to get the conditions right and then wait. Some of those conditions are within you, such as coherence among the parts and levels of your personality. Other conditions require relationships to things beyond you: Just as plants need sun, water, and good soil to thrive, people need love, work, and a connection to something larger. It is worth striving to get the right relationships between yourself and others, between yourself and your work, and between yourself and something larger than yourself. If you get these relationships right, a sense of purpose and meaning will emerge.
